Giving Franklin County students the right start

Many at-risk children lack the most basic school supplies at the start of each school year. Join us for United Way’s Stuff the Bus, where we’ll collect and distribute school supplies to help ensure the right start for Franklin County children.

Stuff the Bus 2017

July 22nd saw many people and organizations at Walmart supporting Stuff the Bus. Among those were the fire department who gave out smoke detectors, the police department who gave out free bicycle helmets to children, South Middle School cheerleaders who encouraged people to get involved in buying school supplies, and FCHS cheerleaders who sold snacks to raise money to buy additional items.  WCDT, WZYX, and the Franklin County Library also joined the community project.  Reliable Rental donated the use of a commercial fan which helped keep volunteers cool and such a hot day!

Many business got involved in collecting supplies prior to the event.  Those include: Nissan, Citizens Community Bank, Citizens Tri-County Bank, SunTrust Bank, Willows of Winchester, and VR Williams Insurance Co. Holts Dinner came out the day of the event and purchased a buggy full of back packs to add to the collection.

Over 6,000 items were collected and delivered to Franklin County Schools involving 75 volunteers!

Clearly the community came out in force to be a part of Stuff the Bus.  This one single United Way event embodies the full picture of helping others. We had volunteers lending their hands and feet, generous people giving school supplies or monetary donations, and we have children who are going to benefit starting the first day of school.  It is a beautiful picture of a caring community coming together for one single purpose - to help our children.
